Golden State Solar GuideDesign a System

About Golden State Solar Guide

A free, independent guide to going solar in Northern California — honest, current, and built to help you decide, not to sell you.

What Golden State Solar Guide is

Golden State Solar Guide is a free, independent information resource for homeowners across Northern California who are trying to figure out whether solar — and a battery — makes sense for their home. We explain the things that actually move the decision here: PG&E rates, NEM 3.0 net billing, backup power for PSPS outages, and what the incentives really are in 2026.

We are not a solar installer, and we are not affiliated with PG&E or any utility. We don’t sell or install systems.

How we try to be useful

Our goal is a clear, honest read — including telling you when solar isn’t a good fit. We keep the information current (for example, the federal residential tax credit ending after 2025), plain-English, and free of pressure. The tools on this site — the Rooftop Designer, the animated Learn explainers, and the national and global solar data — are here to help you understand your options, not to push a sale.

How this is funded (the honest part)

The site is free to use. When you ask us to have a specialist follow up, we may connect you with a vetted local solar professional, and we may be compensated for that introduction. That’s how we keep the resource free — and it never changes what we tell you. You’re always free to use the information and walk away; we’d genuinely rather you skip solar than buy something that isn’t right for your home.

A few important caveats

Everything here is general information, not financial, tax, or engineering advice. Programs, rates and rules change, and the right answer depends on your specific home and utility. Estimates from the Rooftop Designer are illustrative, not binding quotes. Always verify current programs and get a firm quote from a licensed professional before you decide.
